Lin Says is a site for practising spoken English, run from Singapore. Contact: hermans@foxmail.com.

Using Lin without an account

You don't have to sign up. Your browser keeps a random ID in local storage, and that ID is what links your practice to you. Clear this site's data and you start as a new learner. Without an account we set no cookies, and we run no ads or trackers anywhere. The one script not served from this domain is Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts visits without cookies and without identifying you.

If you sign in

Signing in is optional and uses your email address: we send a 6-digit code, no password. We store your email, the language you signed up in, whether you asked for emails, and a session in a cookie that is only sent to Lin's own API (HttpOnly, Secure). What this browser had practised becomes part of your account, so it follows you to other devices. We email you sign-in codes when you ask for them; weekly plans and news about new scenes only if you ticked that box, and you can untick it on the Account page. Emails are sent through Resend.

What we store

Who processes it

The site and its database run on Cloudflare. To answer you, Lin sends your recordings, your messages, and what she remembers about you to OpenAI's API (speech recognition, the conversation, and speech). We don't keep your recordings: they go to transcription and are discarded. Under OpenAI's API data policy, API data is not used to train their models by default.

See it, change it, delete it

Everything Lin remembers is on the Lin remembers page, with where it came from. Edit or delete any item there, or press "Clear everything" to delete your memory, practice history and generated scenes. Signed in, "Delete my account" on the Account page removes the account too. You can also email us and we'll delete it.

Children

Lin is not meant for children under 13.
