Spoken English phrase

What does “Could you help me…?” mean?

Could you help me...? is a polite way to ask for help. Here, could does not mean past time; it makes the request softer than can.

When people say it

  • Ask a worker or stranger politely: "Could you help me find my seat?"
  • Ask for help with a task: "Could you help me set it up?"
  • Use "with" for a thing or part: "Could you help me with this form?"
  • Say the reason after it: "Could you help me out? I'm allergic to peanuts."

Tone: Polite and natural in everyday English; a little softer than "Can you help me...?" and good with strangers or service staff.

Careful: Don't use "check in" when you mean "look something up". "Check in" means registering at a hotel, airport or event. Say "Could you check this for me?" or "Could you help me look this up?"

Quick answers

Is "Could you help me...?" more polite than "Can you help me...?"

Yes, usually a little more polite and softer. Both are natural, but "Could you..." is often better with strangers or in service situations.

Do I say "help me do" or "help me with"?

Both are correct. Use "help me do something" for the action, and "help me with something" for the thing or area.
