Spoken English phrase

What does “Can you…? / Could you…?” mean?

"Can you...?" and "Could you...?" are used to ask someone to do something. They can also check if the person is able to do it now, so the meaning depends on the situation.

When people say it

  • Ask for help or action: "Could you take a look at this report for me?"
  • Check if something works now: "Can you hear me okay?"
  • Make a small request in a service situation: "Could you make it a bit less oily?"
  • Ask for quick help or support: "Could you help me set this up?" / "Could you spot me on my last set?"

Tone: "Can you...?" is casual and direct; "Could you...?" is softer and more polite. Both are natural, but they can still sound pushy if you are hurrying someone or complaining.

Careful: Do not read "Could you...?" as past time here. In requests, it usually means a softer "Can you...?", not something about the past.

Quick answers

Is "Could you...?" more polite than "Can you...?"?

Yes, usually. "Could you...?" sounds softer and more polite, especially with strangers or in service situations.

Can "Can you...?" ask about ability and make a request?

Yes. Context decides the meaning: "Can you hear me?" checks ability now, but "Can you take me to the airport?" is a request.
