Spoken English phrase
What does “How much is…?” mean?
"How much is...?" asks about a price, cost, or amount of money. People use it for things in a shop, rent, fees, and hourly rates.
When people say it
- Ask the price of one thing: "How much is this jacket?"
- Point to an item and ask simply: "How much is this one?"
- Ask for the total price: "How much is all this?"
- Ask about rent or a rate: "How much is the rent?" / "How much is it per hour?"
Tone: Neutral and polite in everyday English; adding "Excuse me" makes it softer with strangers.
Careful: Do not use "is" with plural nouns: say "How much are these shoes?" not "How much is these shoes?" Also, use "how many" for number, not "how much": "How many apples do you want?"
