Spoken English phrase
What does “that works / it works” mean?
"That works" means a plan or idea is okay for you. "It works" means something functions or a method is effective.
When people say it
- To accept a time or plan: "Tuesday at 3?" — "That works for me."
- To say a suggestion is fine: "We can meet online." — "That works."
- To say something functions now: "Try it again." — "Great. It works now."
- To say a method gets results: "I tried your study plan. It works."
Tone: Natural, casual to neutral; "That works for me" sounds a little more polite and complete than just "That works."
Careful: Do not read "that works for me" literally as "it has an effect on me." It usually means a plan is okay for you. If you mean a machine, system, or method itself functions or is effective, "it works" is usually more natural.
