Spoken English phrase

What does “that's fair” mean?

That's fair means your point is reasonable or easy to understand. People often use it to show they get your point before they explain more or change the plan.

When people say it

  • When someone gives a good reason: "That's fair. Let's do it tomorrow."
  • When someone says your plan is too long or too hard: "That's fair. We can make it shorter."
  • When someone says a time does not work: "That's fair. Let's start later."
  • In light jokes, to admit they have a point: "That's fair. 6:15 is rough."

Tone: Casual to neutral, friendly, and understanding. If you say only this and stop, it can sound a little short or cold.

Careful: Do not read it only as "fairness". In many talks, it means "That makes sense" or "I can understand that". If you mean real fairness or equal treatment, say that more clearly.
